2020盛夏，艺术家徐秀美的第一件装置艺术 《鸟笼外的花园》 落成30年后，由宝吉祥集团主动出资修复认养，蜕变重生为台北的城市亮点。宝吉祥集团与艺术家徐秀美延续前缘，将于2020年10月24日在台北宝吉祥艺术中心推出徐秀美个展：《美地意象》。此次个展除了是艺术家的再出发，宝吉祥集团也期许在这疫情下，能以徐秀美充满愿景的作品，为观者带来正面的力量。
《美地意象》为艺术家徐秀美2020年的年度个展，展出多元且充满意象的绘画与装置作品，艺术家以水墨、压克力颜料、复合材料等多元的媒介呈现「生命质变」 ，引领观者跳脱框架，在人与空间、环境的关系中进行新的省思，体悟生命中不同的风景。徐秀美为台湾知名插画家，活跃于各大平面媒体，并包办了倪匡的小说《卫斯理》封面创作。作品也曾刊登于纽约知名设计杂志Print ，更为纽约SAVVY, MMM, GOURMET杂志等设计插画。除了平面绘画外，徐秀美更是一位「全观式」的艺术家。她无疆界的艺术创作追求，藉由探索人与空间的关系，迄今以装置艺术获得了无数奖项，更是推动了台湾许多在地公共艺术创作，成就卓越。

In the mid-summer of 2020, artist May Hsu’s first installation, “Garden Outside the Cage,” celebrated its 30th anniversary after the completion. Glorious Jewel Group took the initiative to repair and adopt this meaningful artwork, transforming it into a new highlight in Taipei City. Glorious Jewel Group and May Hsu move forward their partnership and launch May Hsu's solo exhibition: "Locus Amoenus," presented at Glorious Jewel Art Center from October 24th to December 26th, 2020. Not only as a rebirth for the artist, this solo exhibition also carries the hope from Glorious Jewel Group to bring positive impact to society in this severe moment under the pandemic through May Hsu’s inspirational artworks.
"Locus Amoenus" is May Hsu's annual solo exhibition in 2020. This exhibition features diverse and atmospheric two-dimensional paintings and installations. Employing various medium such as ink, acrylic paint and mixed media to present the "qualitative change in life," May Hsu leads the viewer to think outside of the “frame” and reflect on the relationship among people, space and environment, encouraging individual to see different landscapes in life. May Hsu is an established illustrator in Taiwan, being active in major print media and creating the covers of Ni Kuang's novel, Wesley. Her work has also been published in the well-known design magazine, Print, moreover, she designed illustrations for SAVVY, MMM, GOURMET magazines in New York. In addition to two-dimensional painting, May Hsu is also a "full-perspective" artist. Her pursuit of artistic creation is boundless, and freely explores the relationship between people and space. She has received numerous awards for her installations, which not only encouraged many public art works in Taiwan but also achieved outstanding accomplishment.
This exhibition is also Hsu’s first solo exhibition combining large-scale installation, calligraphy and painting following the exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Taipei in 2010. This time, May Hsu specially brings newly created installation art works into the exhibition. The ingenious combination of plane and multiple dimensions will create an incredible artistic experience to the viewer through the interaction between the audience and the space.
绘画的成就并不是徐秀美艺术的唯一，她是位不断突破自我并不安于现状的前卫艺术家。自1984年于纽约帕森斯设计学院毕业后，她的艺术创作并不拘泥于单一风格并乐于探索新的媒介，跳脱了平面的创作，开始以其艺术家独特的品味探索人与空间。徐秀美蜕变成台湾艺术界一位全观式的艺术家，作品涵盖影像, 雕塑, 家具, 空间装置, 以及大型公共艺术。徐秀美对于艺术的尽兴探索与自由追求，每每为艺术带来蓬勃的生命力。
[About May Hsu]
May Hsu is a legend in Taiwan's illustration industry, and her paintings are romantic, poetic and imaginative yet with a sense of sincerity. Mysterious and interesting paintings are the illusory space depicted by May Hsu with her free and relaxed lines. She captures the flow of the mind and draws the viewer to float in the shades of color details.
The achievement in painting is not the destination of May Hsu’s art pursuit. She is an avant-garde artist who constantly challenges herself and is not restricted by the status quo. Since graduating from Parsons School of Design in New York City in 1984, her artistic creation has not limited to a single style, and she has been willing to explore new media. She jumped outside of the box of graphic creation and began to explore people and space with her unique artistic taste. May Hsu has transformed into a full-perspective artist in Taiwan. Her approaches of art include images, sculptures, furniture, installations, and large-scale public art. May Hsu’s spirit of comprehensive exploration and free pursuit of art always bring vigorous vitality into the art world.
With the in-depth view of “qualitative change in life” as the theme, “Locus Amoenus” is like the reflection of the human space after the COVID-19 pandemic, containing the blueprint of hope from society. Recirculating the mutation and returning to life, like the eagle's rebirth, regaining the power from the new creation and spreading its wings, showing the incredible landscape in life after the qualitative change!
The painting, sculpture and installations are presented respectively on the first and second floor in the space of the modern gallery. It is the artistic collision and division resulted from the intersection of plane and multi-dimensional space. It is the free tension of evolution when different materials meet, and the "new ecology of space" also emerges in the material’s natural state. Is the experience of beauty, the implied pulsation of life in metamorphosis, a period of afternoon wind marks that the soul chews, or is it a beautiful garden that leads to another destiny in life? -May Hsu
